Cumberland Falls Camping Trip

Summer was a busy one for us and we neglected to post much about our activities on here. So here is a quick recap of our camping trip to Cumberland Falls, Kentucky this past June.

John and I decided that camping with a baby and 2 young children is A LOT of work! Not exactly your sit back and relax type of vacation! LOL! We fortunately were able to borrow a friends nice pop up trailer that had AC and decent beds. Without this we would have been rather miserable. It was quite hot and humid for most of the 5 day trip. But we had a wonderful time with the 5 or so other families that came along from our church! It does make for good memories and wonderful fellowship. It helped us enjoy ourselves despite the rain, and more rain, and heat....and did I mention the heat??!! Ha! =)

We did some hiking around the Falls and along the river, played some games, chatted, pigged out on tasty food, had a short church service, etc. One of the main things we all did together was renting pontoon boats to go out on Lake Cumberland. We couldn't all fit on a bigger one so we rented 3 smaller boats. We spent about 3 hours out on the lake (which is more like a river in most parts) and let the kids go swimming at one point. On the way back to the marina and docking area, we ran straight into a very menacing storm. Us adults got pretty nervous as we eyed the clouds just ahead of us.

About 5 mins out, the rain we were trying to out run hit us full force! It came down in pounding ice cold sheets. The wind had picked up a great deal, and we had to huddle with the children under the awning of the pontoon boat which did not provide much protection. Poor John, who was steering the boat in our group of people, couldn't take cover and was blasted by the wind and rain. We finally made it to the docks and rushed into the marina building where the awesome staff gave us towels to dry off with. They told us that they had seen water spouts forming over the water due to the force of the wind. They had also seen cloud rotation right above us as we were racing in! God surely protected us! The main front of the storm was half a mile or so ahead of us on the Lake and on the half hour drive back to our campsite we could see the path where the storm front had knocked down many trees and power lines. Our campsite was fine, but without power for a few hours. It will definitely be a storm remembered by all of us!
